SAVE OUR FISH

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Petition to the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard
Whereas:
  • The Windsor Causeway in Nova Scotia was constructed across the Avon River in 1968 with gates to manage water levels but without proper fish passage and, to this day it, impedes migrations of fishes, including the at Risk Inner Bay of Fundy Wild Atlantic Salmon and American Eel;
  • The gates have been occasionally opened for the past 50+ years to control mainly water levels for Lake Pisiquid, and more recently to facilitate improved fish passage during periods of high water levels;
  • The first salmon in 50+ years, was caught last summer beyond the causeway in the upper reaches of the Avon River;
  • The gates have never been opened to facilitate the annual runs of Wild Atlantic Salmon during their Summer and Fall spawning migrations, which has led to their extirpation in the Avon River; and
  • The Department of Fisheries and Oceans now expects improved efforts for the fish of this river.
We, the undersigned, Citizens of Canada, call upon the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard to request the Province of Nova Scotia ensure the gates at the Windsor Causeway are kept open for an extended period of time, during every incoming and outgoing tide to allow a more natural method of fish passage during their seasonal migrations.
THANK YOU!
  1. Time to let the fish through the gates in Windsor NS the Government are blocking and killing fish.They are breaking their own laws by not following the amended Fisheries Act set forth by our PM. It's time let fish pass through the gates for you are killing fish outside the gates the Government has turned a blind eye to the problems in Windsor NS, fish species need to get through these gates to get up river to spawn and we have salmon here also that need to get up river also they are an endangered species. Do the right thing and open the gates
  2. Look at this ecological disaster: fifty-two years of millions of frustrated fish have died, the whole Minas Basin region has suffered heavy erosion as a result. We have a fisheries minister from this province. We must help her achieve her legacy of being the one to make this right. Please sign and share widely if you'liked to help save the Minas Basin from severe erosion and the tidal river ecosystem. This is too much to sacrifice for a fake lake (There are enough lakes in N.S. thanks to glacier action naturally.) Monoculture farmers up river who want to keep the reclaimed land are polluting the river with pesticides and cattle. They can dyke it instead.
  3. Some Fifty years ago a decision was made based on vote buying by PM Elliot Trudeau. Progressive Conservative and Liberal Premiers of Nova Scotia believed roads were the answer to N.S. economic woes of the day and set forth to put all their eggs in one basket and centralize shipping to the deepest ice free seaport on the Eastcoast. By ripping the guts out of Windsor to build the causeway they had no idea the repercussions it would have on the Minas basin teeming with tidal life. Loss of spawning species upstream is having a disastrous effect on species downstream. Declining stocks of lobster, Crab, oyster, molluscs, Fundy salmon (now endangered) and many more supporting species are the beginning of the end of Commercial fish stocks that have fed Canadians since Confederation. Call it food security for Indigenous peoples or food sovereignty but right now it’s starvation, to the detriment of all people.
  4. How can we expect ordinary citizens to conform to environmental legislation and expectations when we, as a country and province, allow this sort of construction to go forward? Absurd and irresponsible.
